On March 20th, Volunteers with Maricopa County Department of Public Health set up and ran a Point of Dispensing or POD. Volunteers practiced handing out life-saving medications to residents of Maricopa County. A full scale exercise is a great way for volunteers and emergency responders to practice what they would do in a real emergency. During the practice, the volunteers:
Set up tables and pop up tents
Screened forms for allergies to medications
Handed out pretend medications
Reported important information to the Incident Command Center
During public health emergencies like a pandemic influenza, bioterrorist attack or a brand new disease outbreak, volunteers with the health department set up and run these PODs. Residents and visitors from all over Maricopa County would visit the POD to receive their life-saving medications. Volunteers receive training and opportunities to practice throughout the year.
