Sun Lakes Pavement Rehabilitation
Overview
Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) crews will be removing and replacing asphalt on your street over the next couple months.
Please note that the pavement improvements are completed in three steps – Milling, Cement Treatment, and Paving. All three of these steps are done on separate days, and they are completed multiple days apart over the span of a week.
Please see the chart below to find out when crews will be working on your street. Schedule is subject to change for reasons beyond MCDOT’s control, including: weather, equipment failure, illness or other circumstances.
Updates will be made when schedule changes occur.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Listed below are descriptions of the three-step paving process and what you can expect to see on your street in the coming months.
Construction will remove the entire width of the roadway pavement and replace it with new asphalt. The reconstruction includes milling (removal) of the original road, followed by cement treatment, with paving as the last step in the process. Each section of work is anticipated to take two to three weeks to complete.
Residents will be able to leave and enter their homes during construction. Crew members will be available to assist drivers to get in and out of driveways as needed. We ask that you please use caution when driving on the road
The milling operation removes the old existing pavement. After the milling equipment passes your home, you will have a 3” drop from your driveway to the existing subgrade. The existing subgrade is firm and smooth and can be driven on slowly. Cement Treatment of the subgrade will typically follow approximately 1 to 2 days later.
During this operation the subgrade is effectively pulverized to mix in cement, then compacted and graded to the proper new lines and slopes of the roadway. Within a given stretch of roadway, this operation takes approximately 2 to 3 hours, after which time the road is again left smooth and can be driven on slowly. The road will be usable immediately after being graded to a smooth and stable surface, and will remain unchanged until paving follows a day or two later.
Paving is the final step and involves spreading a thin layer of asphalt concrete followed by compaction and smoothing. The asphalt material is extremely hot initially and gradually cools during the compaction process. YOU ARE FREE TO DRIVE ON THE NEW PAVEMENT APPROXIMATELY 60 TO 90 MINUTES AFTER IT HAS BEEN PLACED.
The Sun Lakes Pavement Rehabilitation project will be completed in seven phases.
Some phase overlap can be expected during construction
Sun Lakes Pavement Rehabilitation Project
- Replaces existing pavement, bringing roadway up to current standards
- Maintains structural integrity of the pavement
- Improves the ride and safety of the public
PARKING
Temporary “No Parking” signs will be posted 48 hours before work starts on your road. Please do not park on the road until the signs are removed. Vehicles that have not been moved out of “No Parking” zones during active construction will be towed to the Sun Lakes Cottonwood Country Club parking lot, and the HOA will be contacted to assist with notifying the owner.
Coordination with the HOA, trash collection, postal delivery and emergency services will continue throughout the duration of the project.
If you have any questions regarding this work, please contact the MCDOT Project Line at (602) 506-3342 or mcdotprojects@maricopa.gov.
