Board of Supervisors Appoints Citizen Panel to Review LD-30 Senate Applicants

301 Admin Building

As required by law, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors has appointed a citizen panel to begin the process of filling the Arizona Senate vacancy in Legislative District 30.

The following people were chosen to sit on the panel:

  • Daniel Valenzuela (Chair)—Glendale Firefighter; Former Phoenix City Councilman, District 5
  • Bill Brotherton—Superior Court Judge; Former LD-30 State Senator
  • Richard Crews—Director of Programs, Human Services Campus
  • Crystal Carrillo—LD-30 Precinct Committee Chairwomen
  • Jessica Bueno—Small Business Owner; Phoenix Elementary School Governing Board member
  • José Guadalupe Conchas—Alhambra Elementary School Governing Board member
  • Stan Chavira—Community Affairs Director, UFCW99

In accordance with ARS 41-1202, section B, a citizen panel is required for a vacancy in a district in which there are fewer than 30 elected precinct committeemen.  LD 30 has 29 precinct committeemen.

The newly-appointed panel will review applications and will, within 21 days, submit three names of qualified electors to the Board for consideration.  Those electors must meet the requirements, live in the district and be of the same party as the person who vacated the office.  In this case, that means a member of the Democratic Party.  The Board of Supervisors will consider the list of electors and by a majority vote, choose a person to fill the vacancy.

Anyone interested in the position can send their cover letters and resumes to the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors by email at clerkboard@maricopa.gov or by direct mail to Clerk of the Board of Supervisors, 301 W. Jefferson, Phoenix, AZ 85003.  All applications are due by August 23, 2021. All documents filed with the Clerk's Office will become public records. Applicants are subject to a background check.
